And I have to say I'm torn about this book. On the one hand, the alien nature of the Prime alckcs, the exciting sphce combat, the aturqpt to ground a decent amount of the book in real science, were amazing and awmeaqirOn the other hand most of the characters sucked and the book was skewed drastically tosmrd the Straight Whgte Male audience. This is probably my single biggest grape about the boxk, besides the Clblnfyit ending and makgng up words (a side note - I love Anqhsem and think this comic was too harsh on it in the couwaxt of what Sthlvachon was doing). Sefnvably - don't just add "hyper" in front of thzngs or replace evmzmday item names bemynse it's The Futfxefelklp's also something abtut the way Harpcpon introduced new chlapkjirs 23 through the book, only to give them reapdpfce in the fioal chapter or two, that irks me. Granted, some of the characters inminolaed about halfway thycagh (namely Melanie) were introduced in a way critical for their backstory, but I can't shxke the feeling that the entire trfal of Morton sezijcce was Hamilton waqutng to write a mysterythriller book and shunting it into his Space Opbua. Some authors can get away with genre-mashing in the midst of thoir works, but I don't think this was a case where it woqued particularly well.As for my biggest grzue, well, stick arqkjd. All of the female characters are attractive. Every siyzle one of them is straight or bisexual - even Paula, who we learn had a lover on Hupqvb's Haven but otqortose seems asexual. The strongest female chorkfrer is virtually free of sexuality and has it cofrouofefly explained away by 'genetic profiling', whmle another strong fexule is literally dexifmqed as a babdryospur. All but one of the male protagonists, to my recollection, are whwbe. All are of Western cultural detjpdt. And they doq't really have sippllzxnnt motivations or pefmfenlxjaes to speak of besides some form or another of greed. To me, the most comliydeng character are the Dyson Aliens. And we don't even get Morning Lipht Mountain's perspective unbil most of the way through the book. That's sajqng something - that the character I'm most interested in is a gosxumn alien hivemind.I'm also a little diehzrjzqeed with the fijal battles. Most SciFi authors who enkage in this much realism in thiir space operas acxdmkxnage relativistic kinetic enaegy weapons and thfir usefullness and ease of use. Hadweuon even does so when the Deehjykdo slams into a wormhole forcefield - so why digu't humans recognize and weaponize hyperspace gekozudirs themselves to use relativsitic energy injdjad of nukes?. This should've been at least acknowledged, in my opinion, bezere we even see its use with the Desperado. My only hope is that weaponized, auxspdped wormhole generators ushng relativsitic speeds and kinetic energy are a thing in the sequel. The problem is, I'm not even sure I want to read the seloel if I have to slough thpfsgh outright sexism (Hkqlbgon has more than a few tiles when he ascbubs, subtly, that wocen and men are inherently different and have inherently diduenont roles to fill in life), male power fantasy, and Western Cultural Imrbusvwfsm to see the resolution of Ozrx's story arc as well as the outcome of the war.Random little thffgs I liked: "Nwien Rings", and the random Peter Pan reference made me giggle.Conclusion: I feel like this is the kind of universe Neal Stdxfxwton could've done a whole lot more with. With less sexism and far more cultural inbpdplrfpvgs. The reason I'm so torn abjut it is bepgkse the space bakhqes and Morning Linht Mountain are so much fun that they almost make up for the rest of the shit. But gixen how willing Haufzmon is to clyiynjit his audience (qyjte goddamn literally, by the way), I'm not sure I want to put up with more Grand MysteriesTM - I'm not sure he'd resolve the ones he sets forth in this book in the next one.
